Sara Ali Khan is an Indian actress who works in Hindi-language films. Born into the Pataudi family, she is the daughter of actors Amrita Singh and Saif Ali Khan. She is the paternal granddaughter of Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and Sharmila Tagore, and the maternal granddaughter of Shivinder Singh Virk and Rukhsana Sultana.


After graduating from Columbia University, Khan ventured into acting by playing the leading lady in the 2018 films Kedarnath and Simmba. A disagreement between producer Kapoor and Kriarj Entertainment caused a temporary suspension of filming until RSVP Movies took over production duties. A few weeks before release, Kedarnath Temple priests tried to stop the film from being screened. They accused it of promoting love jihad and a BJP leader agreed by calling for its boycott in India as well!


Banning of Kedarnath in Uttarkhand


The film was banned in the state of Uttarakhand. However, reviews were more positive than negative with praise directed at Khan's performance.

Kunal Guha of Mumbai Mirror found it to be a rehash of old Hindi films but enjoyed Khan's performance. He said


“She channels her emotions through facial expressions and body language, often communicating with just one or two words at a time while letting her expressive eyes do all of the talking for them."

A few weeks after the release of Kedarnath, Khan starred in Rohit Shetty's action film Simmba alongside Ranveer Singh. The movie is loosely based on Telugu-language Temper (2015). She then again continued to work on this shooting of Kedarnath was temporarily suspended.


This led to Abhishek Kapoor suing Khan; they settled out of court after she agreed to split her time between both films. Ronak Kotecha criticized Khan for being little more than " breathtakingly beautiful " in the film. He also disliked her chemistry with Singh, feeling that it didn't work well together and seemed forced at times when they were supposed to be romantic on screen.


With worldwide earnings of ₹4 billion (US$53 million), Simmba emerged as the third highest-grossing Hindi film in 2018.


Imtiaz Ali's romantic drama Love Aaj Kal (2020) was a spiritual successor to a 2009 film of the same name. Nandini Ramnath criticized her in this play due to a lack of interesting plot and complex characters, in which she starred opposite Kartik Aaryan. Nandini Ramnath wrote, "she simply lacks the experience or expertise to make this work.". The movie was received negatively by critics but performed well at the box office with $2 million collected during its opening week alone!


Khan's latest film, Coolie No. 1 was released this year and stars her alongside fellow Hindi cinema actor Varun Dhawan in an adaptation of David Dhaulan’s 1995 movie of the same name.
